I had the old model Adventurer that frequently turned itself off in the middle of a purification cycle or wouldn't start at all. This model fixes all those problems, plus it works as a backup flashlight. It's been absolutely reliable on four trips now and I love it. Sure beats carrying a 1 lb. filter.
I recommend you get a water-clear bottle so it's easy to see when the UV light turns off; Nalgene makes one in the Tritan series. Tinted bottles make it hard to see whether the light is glowing or not, especially in the sun.

I had held off on getting one of these for awhile. Basically the concept seemed like magic to me. Wave the magic light in your water and kill all the germs. Well guess what? They work.
You will still need to filter to get any chunks out, SteriPen makes the FitsAll Filter just for this purpose. The FitsAll filter also acts like and adapter to fit the SteriPEN into a Kleen Kanteen. That makes for 1 liter of water purified in less than a minute.
This model comes with a nice neoprene case that will clip to your belt and a removable hard plastic cover that helps protect the end. It also has a flash light function, so you can filter at night.
They have also put in some circuitry to keep it from turning on unless you have it submerged in the water. So no more accidentally turning it on and running down the batter. I haven't had this model for too long, but I'm loving it so far.

Recently I completed the Kokoda track walk in Papua and New Guinea. Once on this walk there is no support so your gear has to be reliable and effective. In preparation I had acquired this model of steripen through Amazon. When it arrived I tested it and found the internal connections around the battery were not good, however, a small piece of aluminium foil seemed to complete the circuit consistently. [ideally I would have returned the item to Amazon for replacement but the logistics of sending it back from Australia and then waiting for the new one were not possible in the time before I left - this is no criticism of Amazon's despatch and delivery time which has always been excellent]. On day 3 of the 8 day walk the pen stopped working and would not resume no matter how much fiddling I did with some more aluminium foil. Fortunately I had taken purification pills just in case and they came in handy.
In the party was another person who had an identical steripen [coincidentally acquired from Amazon too] that also failed. So in all two of twenty pens failed.
Fortunately neither party became ill largely through disciplined personal hygiene, the use of our back up procedures and guides taking us to streams that they believed were clean.
I know many have used steripens without an issue but frankly this concerned me because when it was really needed this product did not prove electrically reliable. If you do buy one I STRONGLY recommend you test test test it when you receive it rather than finding out in the field that you bought a lemon.

This little steripen allowed me to drink dozens of gallons of tap water... in India. `nuff said!
Seriously, it works like a charm. My own paranoia had me run two cycles through each liter of water, though. Regardless, I managed to completely avoid any g.i. issues drinking for 6 weeks from what most western tourists' tummies would consider a bio-hazard. That's a little much, but you get my point.
My only reservation with this review (4 stars, not 5) comes from the shape of the pen. As I lower it into my nalgene, there isn't anything really to keep it from slipping out of my grip other than a fine line where the bottom cap fits on. Considering that you have to swirl the device around to expose as much water as possible to the UV, all that motion and no grip leads to a little anxiety. I would -love- to see a slight rim around the base just so you won't have to worry if you'll be fishing your steripen out of the bottom of your bottle.
Even with this mild concern in mind, I emphatically recommend getting one for international travel. Step two for me is to see how this handles mountain stream water!

I recently took mine up to the Boundary Waters where abuse to all gear is the staple since portaging, hiking, and exposure to water via rain or tipped over canoe are commonplace. My SteriPEN Adventurer held up to these elements and delivered on drinkable water. I'm not sure why people have had issues turning theirs on since it was pretty easy to do such. I will say, though, the "ON" switch is sturdy enough to where bumping into it wouldn't turn it on.
I used it in two Nalgene water bottles (one tinted charcoal grey and the other chartreuse yellow) and had no issues not seeing the UV light turn on - even at high noon. It'd take a minute or less to clean the water, dry the SteriPEN, and put it back into my bag where it takes hardly any space. Also, no hassles with pumps and tubes like my friend's filters.
My only gripe, which isn't much b/c its not that big of a deal, but I wish it would buzz or vibrate when it was done. I usually would scoop up the water at the base of my campsite and bring the water up to camp and talk with my friends while using the SteriPEN. I'd find myself a few times looking down after a bit and the light already had turned off - I'd get too carried away in conversation. It gives you a small blinking green light that lasts for about 20 seconds that'll tell you if the water is good to drink after it's finished purifying, but if you're talking to your friends or caught up in a sunrise or sunset or something worth seeing when out in the wilderness, it'd be nice for the system to vibrate to your hand to tell you it purified the water instead of being glued to watching the device the whole time.
